A long-awaited settlement comes as a legal victory for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer for blocking its anti-inflammatory drug, Celebrex, from being sold online.
The company, which sells arthritis-drugs as an arthritis painkiller, said on Monday it is taking legal action against Pfizer for its illegal trade in the arthritis drug.
The settlement allows Pfizer to pay $2.5 billion to settle a number of lawsuits claiming the drug is a legitimate arthritis treatment.
In a statement, Pfizer said the company is seeking a preliminary settlement of $25 billion in damages and will continue to market its arthritis drugs.
Pfizer has been the world's largest maker of prescription drugs, and a big part of Pfizer's strategy in the pharmaceutical industry is to block sales of arthritis drugs, known as "COX-2 inhibitors," from going generic.
In addition, Pfizer said the company is working with drug manufacturers and others to stop sales of COX-2 inhibitors from coming to the United States.
Pfizer has also been in litigation with a number of other manufacturers, including some that claim that it is a controlled substance.
The settlement resolves the case and will apply to the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, where it will pay Pfizer $1.9 billion.
The company said that if a drug company were found guilty in a lawsuit, it would take legal action against the companies.
